A majestic sculpture depicting Mercury (the Greek Hermes) – the messenger of the gods, patron of travellers, merchants, and inventors – captured in the iconic pose created by Giambologna in the 16th century. The god is frozen in an extraordinary, dynamic moment of flight: balancing on the tip of his toe, which rests upon a breath of wind emerging from the mouth of Zephyr. One hand is raised triumphantly toward the heavens, while the other holds the caduceus – a winged staff entwined with two serpents, a symbol of commerce, diplomacy, and wisdom. On his head he wears the characteristic winged helmet (petasos), and his feet are adorned with winged sandals (talaria), which allowed him to move at the speed of thought between the realm of the gods and the world of mortals.
